Introducing Images
Images is a newly established international peer-reviewed journal for visual studies published by the Center for visual studies in Zagreb. This is the first scholarly journal in Southeast Europe with the main scope to disseminate knowledge in the field of visual studies and visual culture studies. The journal is concieved of as a dynamic platform for exchanging ideas in our incessantly globalizing world with special emphasis on visual artefacts regardless of how we make particular use of them or what their general purpose might be.
Visual studies, as a way of dealing with visible and material world, make no distinction between high and low art or elitist and profane images in broader sense. Instead of building its theoretical and scientific background on previously established set of values, it seeks to broaden visual horizons and to incorporate in its field of study vast array of images: both canonical and "indecent", spectacular and "irrelevant", artistic and "trivial".
In doing so, visual studies as a discipline faces numerous questions and concerns which trouble its present position inside humanities and particularly inside sciences which deal with images, art and media. The crucial question posed here is not just what the main target of the investigation should visual studies address but what methodology should it use and how far will it go from the more prominent disciplines, such as art history or film studies.
The purpose of Images is to bring to the fore both subjects and methods of inquiry concerning visual media in order to play constructive role in developing the field together with existing journals and initiatives around the world.
Images will be published annually, in electronic english-only format and with thematic scope made around single theme. Submissions should follow general call for papers. All submitted articles will be subject to double-blind peer reviewing process in which will take part members of the Journal's Editorial board; all this in order to achieve top quality scholarly level of all published papers and eventually making the Journal reference point when it comes to visual studies.
Call for papers for our first volume will follow shortly.
